Room Arrangements

Currently a WIP, will update as rooms are taken

Room 1- Jeremy Blake
This room, although looking completely normal, gives off a strange and mysterious vibe.
Room 2- Miyako Kiyomizu
This room is filled with water, except for a round circle of ground where a simple futon and dresser are located. Obviously intended for a water-user, or someone who just likes to swim. A path of ground leads from the door to the center. Everything in this room is water-proof.
Room 3-
A white room with a vanity, glittering walls, and an extra dresser. While still simple, it's fit for the glamorous.
Room 4-Lily Maxwell
This room is similar to room 2, but with less water. A pool of water lies to the left and right of the room, while a simple bed and dresser are located against the wall in the middle. Just like in room 2, everything in this room is water-proof.
Room 5-
A nicely shaded room, although very small. However, a mini-fridge seems to make up for it.
Room 6- Nell Sands
A comfy room with a nice, fluffy bed. It would seem perfect, except for a small, suspicious-looking red stain on the wall near the bed.
Room 7-Serenity Lessiran
A completely soundproof room capable of holding in even the loudest of noises. Great for parties.
Room 8-
With all the scratching posts and playthings a cat could ever want, this room might seem like a virtual Disneyland to a small kitty. However, just like most of the other rooms, it doesn't contain a window.
Room 9- Raegen Locke
An exquisitely fire-proof room prepared for a fire-user. The walls seem to gleam like metal, although otherwise they look normal.
Room 10- Castila Davis
A completely normal room, with plenty of space to put things away.
Room 11-Jessi Spencer
One of the only three rooms with a window overlooking the front yard. Otherwise, a rather spacious room.
Room 12-Nathaniel De Luca
Depictions of Sakura blossoms decorate this Japanese-style room, complete with tatami mats. This is also the second room to have a window overlooking the front yard.
Room 13- Caretaker's Abode/Shinji's room
A room that is surprisingly in dire need of repair. The only good thing about it is that it is the third and last room that has a nice window.

I need to catch up on Legend of Korra, but I've watched every episode of the first series, and I watched the horrible live-action movie.
And yeah. Wings and all, I need a window to jump out of every now and then, unless I feel like getting a running start.

Vandalism: A Game That Turns into a Legal Nightmare | NH Legal ...

NH criminal attorney

It may start out as innocent fun, tossing rocks at what looks to be a junk car, or spray painting an old wall. Maybe you didn?t have plans on doing anything all, but you got caught up in the wrong crowd who pressured to you do a little damage to another?s property.

New Hampshire law is clear; the destruction of property is considered a crime. If convicted, you could face serious penalties that result in a criminal misdemeanor or felony. A conviction lasts on your record forever. NH criminal law attorney Ryan Russman defends those who have been wrongly charged of vandalism.

What is Considered Vandalism?

In the summer of 2011, a group of minors trespassed onto school property in Concord, New Hampshire and slashed the tires of 27 school buses. The Concord Monitor reported that the school district had 29 buses. The destruction was discovered that morning, and the school had no way to transport approximately 2,500 students to school. The police arrested four students, and each minor was given one count of criminal mischief ? a felony charge.

Once charged and convicted of vandalism, you could face seven years in prison along with hefty fines of up to $4000.

Any type of destruction of another?s property is considered vandalism. An individual can be charged with a criminal misdemeanor or a felony based on the circumstances and past criminal records. Even if property seems unused or belonging to no one, if you destroy it, you could face penalties that change the course of your life. Acts of vandalism commonly include:

  • Breaking windows
  • Damaging benches or public seating areas
  • Ripping bus seats
  • Slashing tires
  • Moving or breaking tombstones
  • Scratching windows
  • Keying vehicles
  • Etching in desks, tables or other furniture
  • Spray painting or graffiti
  • Destruction of a church or synagogue
  • Destruction of government facilities or public property (including highways)
  • Destruction of crops or farmland

Tampering with property can cause irrevocable damage to the owner. If you have a vandalism charge and get convicted you may be required to pay for damages to the property owner along with court fines and penalties.

False Vandalism Charges May Still Lead to Conviction

If you don?t have right representation, and know you weren?t involved in a vandalism crime, you still could be convicted of a criminal misdemeanor. The best course of defense is to hire an experienced attorney who is well-versed in criminal law. Ryan Russman has years of experience as a NH criminal attorney and has helped hundreds of clients prove their innocence. Why suffer the consequences if you didn?t commit the crime?

Vandalism Laws in New Hampshire

According to the vandalism laws of New Hampshire, destroying property is considered criminal mischief. Anyone who has damaged another?s property by defacing, rendering useless, or otherwise destroying could be subject to vandalism laws. New Hampshire stipulates that this type of criminal mischief is considered a Class B felony, or Class A misdemeanor depending on the circumstances that surround the crime. The following types of crimes may be subject to a felony conviction:

  • Financial losses in excess of $1000
  • Impairing public communication, transportation or other services (such as water or gas)
  • Damaging historical or cultural private or public property
  • Discharging a firearm in public indoor area

When a property owner reports less than $1000 but more than $100 in damages, the vandalism charge could be changed to a misdemeanor.

'Done...for you big boy;' How emails nailed Barclays

By Steve Slater and Kirstin Ridley , Reuters

LONDON -- "Done ... for you big boy," read a message sent by a Barclays banker to one of the lender's traders, who had asked him to fix a key lending rate artificially low.

"Dude, I owe you big time! Come over one day after work and I'm opening a bottle of Bollinger," a trader from another firm emailed a banker at Barclays, showing his thanks for the rate set artificially low.

UK-based Barclays has agreed to pay $453 million in fines to UK and U.S. regulators to settle its part of an investigation into whether banks manipulated the London Interbank Lending Rate, know as Libor.

Investigators were helped by extensive emails and other messages about Libor, a set of benchmarks designed to indicate the rate at which banks estimate they are able to lend to each other. Libor is used to set corporate and personal borrowing rates worldwide.

Communications released by authorities on Wednesday showed Barclays traders calling each other "superstar" and with little concern for covering their tracks as they urged colleagues responsible for submitting Barclays' Libor rates to try and influence final prices.

Requests came in such as: "We need a really low 3m fix, it could potentially cost a fortune. Would really appreciate any help."

And: "Your annoying colleague again ... Would love to get a high one month. Also if poss a low three month ... if poss ... thanks."

Traders made their requests in person, via email and through electronic "chats" over an instant messaging system.

On a few occasions, some traders even made entries in electronic calendars to remind themselves what requests to make of Barclays' Libor submitters the next day.

One trader would shout across the desk to make sure other traders had no conflicting preference to ask the Libor submitters.

"The traders were barking orders like they were at a fast food drive-through and the submitters were so accommodating that they might as well have said, 'do you want fries with that'," said Bart Chilton, a commissioner at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which led the settlement agreement.

Some 257 requests were made to rate submitters from at least 14 Barclays derivatives traders over four years. Traders at other banks also tried to influence Barclays' rate, while Barclays' traders put pressure on the rates offered by others.

Most of the world's biggest banks are under investigation as regulators from Europe, North America and Japan attempt to prove banks rigged rates. Barclays is the first to settle.

"This is the way you pull off deals like this chicken, don't talk about it too much, 2 months of preparation... the trick is you do not do this alone ... this is between you and me but really don't tell ANYBODY," a Barclays trader told a trader at another bank.

Investigators said Barclays derivatives traders got the bank to submit inaccurate rates between 2005 and 2008 so they could profit. The bank also submitted artificially low rates from September 2007 to May 2009 to ease fears it faced funding problems during the financial crisis.

Judging by the messages, Barclays was not alone in having an interest in lowering their submitted rates during the crisis to avoid signaling to markets their distress.

On one occasion, a manager said if Barclays submitted its correct rate, "It's going to cause a @!$%# storm," and the bank submitted a lower rate.

But the bank's treasury staff were beginning to become uneasy. In late 2007, Barclays told the UK Financial Services Authority and the British Bankers' Association, the trade body under whose auspices Libor is set, of its concerns that rivals were setting rates too low.

Months later, a senior Barclays treasury manager called the BBA and warned them that rates were not accurate, but that Barclays was not the worst offender.

"We're clean, but we're dirty clean, rather than clean-clean," he said.

"No-one's clean-clean," the BBA representative responded.?

Lana Del Rey, A$AP Rocky 'National Anthem' Video: Rewriting History

New clip finds Del Rey and Rocky playing Jackie and John F. Kennedy and is loaded with both social and political commentary.
By James Montgomery

Lana Del Ray and A$AP Rocky in the music video for "National Anthem"
Photo:

Last week, when news broke that Lana Del Rey and A$AP Rocky would be portraying star-crossed Camelot couple Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy in the video for LDR's "National Anthem," we were pretty sure the clip would create controversy. And now that it's premiered, we're going to stand by that assumption.

On Wednesday morning (June 27), Del Rey posted the "Anthem" clip on YouTube, and it's sure to cause a stir — for all the reasons you'd probably expect, and a few you wouldn't.

Sure, there are some who will object to the clip's re-telling of history: Del Rey actually plays both Jackie Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe — a loaded proposition when you consider the long-standing rumors of an affair between the actress and the commander in chief — and the clip opens with her doing Monroe's sultry "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" from 1962. She then switches to the more demure Jackie, the doting wife to Rocky's JFK, and their love story unfurls over seven hazy, dreamlike minutes. In a way, the dual roles seem to be director Anthony Mandler's way of exploring the complexities of one of our nation's most celebrated (and discussed) first couples: the notion that, from the outside, all appeared to be perfect, while, internally, their marriage was wrought with indiscretions and very stormy indeed.

There is also the fact that the clip is loaded with social commentary. The scenes of Del Rey and Rocky cavorting in the Kennedy's Hyannis Port compound very boldly show the so-called "American Camelot" (the term used to describe the unbridled hope associated with the Kennedy presidency) through a decidedly 2012 prism. Here is the first family reimagined as a beautiful white wife and a confident, powerful black husband, very much in love, caring for their biracial children, holding court with their associates. It was a scene that was practically unimaginable during the 1960s, and one that, sadly, is still sure to rankle some today.

To say the least, it is evocative, and yet, to his credit, Mandler manages to avoid hammering the viewer with any of it. Instead, he shows the love between the two in a series of fleeting glances, caresses and smiles. And in a deft way of heading off those who say he's disrespecting the Kennedy legacy, he largely avoids what most have come to associate with JFK's presidency: his assassination in 1963. Sure, the scene exists in the video, and it is shot Zapruder-style, but he spares us any of those grisly, "back-and-to-the-left" film frames. Instead, we hear a single gunshot, then watch as Del Rey's Jackie crawls over the trunk of the couple's convertible, a look of horror and shock on her face. In a way, that only impacts the terror of the moment and drives home the point that, regardless of racial makeup, this is a couple that truly was in love.

It also manages to capture the sheer sadness of the moment. After all, in a lot of ways, Kennedy's assassination represented the death of a dream: It was the moment when the idyllic 1960s began to disappear and only served as a preview for the tremendous social and political upheaval that would come to define the decade.

So while "National Anthem" may boldly redefine both an era and an iconic couple and make us reconsider our social stigmas, it is, at the end, a very truthful representation of the love two people shared, a doomed, unsustainable thing that, for a fleeting moment, we all dared to believe in. And I'd like to think that's the main message of the video: the willingness to trust in the impossibility of love, despite mounting evidence to the contrary. Sure, you can focus on the racial aspects of the clip or its historical accuracy, but it seems like you'd be missing the point, really.

What did you think of the "National Anthem" video? Let us know in the comments!

Hard Hat Area: Because Safety Always Comes First

Jobs that require muscle are usually careers that involve lifting, heavier lifting and more lifting. Unless you would like to work as a bouncer then you would not be doing much of it. But still, when you think heavy equipment, hardy men comes to mind first.

Yet, that is not what it is all about. Not all guys who work at areas of heavy work are sturdy because honestly, it is not all the brawns that matter. That s why many jobs do not just hire for built but rather based on the experience and training that a person has had.

Just like for forklifting, it sure is an unusual job and there might not be a degree for it but it sure needs training to become one. Forklift training is an option for people who enjoy this type of work, and since not everyone has the chance to work a white-collar job, why not try other fields as well, right?

What Is Forklifting And Why It Needs Training

Learning to operate a forklift is not like riding a bike. You cannot afford to fall so many times as you will be required to handle situations, cargos and equipment that are in need of extreme care. As an operator, you must be able to assess the situation, rightfully know how to handle and of course, minimize the potential risk.

Sure, riding and falling from the bike makes you learn but forklifting needs no extra danger. That is why every person who wishes to work with bigger toys need training. Accredited institutions offer forklift training, which involves classroom and hands-on learning. Driving a forklift is not your average drive around town, one has to be able to assess the speed with consideration to the load. This is why training is required, no person can work as one without training.

Training usually starts with sit-down sessions learning the basics of it, then after, students will be allowed to operate their own forklift with the guidance of an instructor. Moving of heavy objects, lifting from high to low and passing through inclines and skimpy spaces will all be part of the training. Everything is required to be done without spilling the contents of the cargo or bumping into other structures within the area.

As such, people with impaired vision or those with a disorder that may limit physical movement are given better options. Forklifting may look like driving a golf cart but it does beyond paved planes and flying golf balls. It needs its operators to be active, alert and of course, fit.

So you see, it is not just all about being big and muscular, it needs training that is why any man or woman, skinny or not, can train to become one. Any limitations that a person may have will be known under training. Trainings are conducted to make sure that individuals who are in this line of work are not only working for the money but most especially is in it for safety.

HONG KONG (AP) ? Asian stocks mostly drifted lower Monday as investors grew cautious ahead of a critical European Union summit later this week where Greek leaders will attempt to renegotiate some terms of the country's international bailout.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index was 0.4 percent lower at 8,765.54 and South Korea's Kospi slid 1.4 percent to 1,822.19. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was down 0.9 percent at 4,012.00.

But Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.3 percent to 19,060.11 as it fluctuated between gains and losses.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.6 percent to 2,248.23. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indonesia also fell.

Investors are plagued by twin worries over an economic slowdown in China, the world's second biggest economy, and a debt crisis in Europe that seemingly has no end.

"Market sentiment is weighed down by a weakening Chinese economy and also the European debt crisis," said Louis Wong, a director Phillip Securities.

Investor pessimism about the state of the world economy prevailed even as the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Spain agreed over the weekend to push for a growth package worth up to ?130 billion ($163 billion) at the European Union summit scheduled for June 28-29 in Brussels.

The proposal was "predictably vague, lacking details on content and financing and thus was given scant regard," Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said in a market commentary.

The summit, aimed at kick-starting the economy and safeguarding the currency bloc, will prove a key test of Greek leaders' pledges to loosen the terms of the country's bailout. Greece's new government said on the weekend it would seek to repeal some taxes, halt layoffs and extend a deadline for tough austerity measures by two years. But Germany, the biggest single contributor to the bailout, says Athens must stick to the current targets.

Previous summits and meetings have failed to deliver a "credible set of solutions to the Eurozone crisis," strategists at Credit Agricole CIB said, so "markets are likely to remain relatively range bound ahead of the summit."

On Wall Street on Friday, stock markets bounced back. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.5 percent to close at 12,640.78. The Standard & Poor's 500 index 0.7 percent to 1,335.02 and the Nasdaq composite index climbed 1.1 percent to 2,892.42.

Benchmark crude was up 45 cents to $80.22 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract settled at $79.76 a barrel on Friday.

In currencies, the euro slipped to $1.2536 to from $1.2561 in late trading Friday. The dollar fell to 80.25 Japanese yen from 80.45 yen.

Mock 2012 NBA draft: Davis still goes No. 1

The easy choice, presumably, is for the Hornets to select Kentucky big man Anthony Davis with the No. 1 overall choice in Thursday night's NBA draft.

After that pick, there doesn't appear to be any consensus choices.

And that's not encouraging for Bobcats owner Michael Jordan. With the second pick, Jordan's selection is significant for a franchise in dire need of good players.

There are some indications Jordan will pick Kansas power forward Thomas Robinson. But will it be Connecticut power forward Andre Drummond? Or North Carolina small forward Harrison Barnes? Or Kentucky small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

"I would not want to have the second pick this year," one Western Conference team executive said. "That's a scary pick. You could pick a stud or you could pick an OK player."

Or a bust, and that can't be the kind of thing Jordan wants to hear.

But the teams below the Bobcats won't have it easy in the draft either.

Most teams are bringing in players for private workouts and executives are gathering in groups to watch other promising players.

In the last week, some players who were expected to be lottery picks have had some poor showings, and consequently their stock has dropped.

"Some of these players aren't NBA-ready," another Western Conference executive said. "That's why so many players are moving all over the place on draft boards."

Then there is the case of Ohio State's undersized center Jared Sullinger.

NBA doctors diagnosed him with back problems after the NBA pre-draft camp at UIC. The 6-foot-9 prospect, a projected lottery pick, apparently has dropped out of the top 16 picks.

With just a few days to go before the draft, some players have been impressive enough in workouts to have improved their chances of getting picked earlier.

That list includes Weber State point guard Damian Lillard, Illinois center Meyers Leonard and Florida guard Bradley Beal.

"This draft tells you that the draft is based on potential," the first executive said. "The kids are so potential-based that they have to go to the right team. If they go to the right place, there could be some stars in this draft."

Yasmine Mohseni: Beyond the White Cube, Paris, Part I: Who Says Art Can't Be Fun?

2012-06-21-YM_1.jpg

I recently rediscovered Paris, one of my hometowns. I explored the city's contemporary art scene and delved into its galleries, non-profits and museums. What I found was an open and welcoming community enthused to have a dialogue with people from diverse creative fields. Paris' contemporary arts community is surprisingly small considering the city's rich history as a creative capital. But perhaps it is for this very reason that the contemporary scene is not as prolific as in other major European cities such as Berlin, London and New York: so many Parisian institutions dedicate their time and efforts to art history and France's past crowning cultural achievements from Charles Le Brun to Marcel Duchamp. That said, there is a strong community of artists and art professionals interested in looking forward and creating new work, some inspired by the past and others breaking from it. I also noticed a very real interest among the people I met in what was happening in contemporary art in Southern California, including one gallery that opened an exhibition of California artists shortly after my arrival. So, on a hot day in late May, I visited a curator and her artists as they installed their show in the Marais in Paris. Here's my visit to Brachfeld Gallery on the opening day of the "Greetings" exhibition.

2012-06-21-YM_2.jpg
Who Says Art Can't Be Fun? Artists Kyle Field, Alia Shawkat and Nathaniel Russell

Ed Brachfeld is an American in Paris who, in addition to having an art and fashion production company, opened a gallery in 2008. For his current show, he turned to curator-food blogger-photographer and woman-about-town Danielle Rubi to select a group of artists. Danielle invited three California-based artists, Kyle Field, Nathaniel Russell and Alia Shawkat to an artist's residence in Burgundy to create work for the show, which explores the literal and abstracted meanings of a greeting. And the plot thickens -- Fine artist is merely one of the job descriptions adopted by these three multi-talented individuals. Kyle has been performing and recording for years under the name Little Wings and Nat plays and records music under the name Birds Of America. Alia is a singer and actress, best known for her portrayal of Maeby in Arrested Development, one of the best television shows ever to air. The result is an eclectic and fun exhibition, which was kicked off by an equally fun and very well-attended opening featuring music, drinks and, of course, art. And let's not forget there was an after party. Where? Paris' only good Mexican restaurant Candelaria, of course. What else would you expect from a group of self-respecting Californians?!

Yasmine Mohseni: You're an artist but, for this exhibition, you've taken on the role of curator. Was this a difficult transition?

Danielle Rubi: I've organized shows in the past. I pulled together a group of San Francisco artists to participate in Andrea Zittel's "High Desert Test Sites" and I've also organized music- and art-based events at galleries. However, this is the first show where I've taken on the role as curator in a broader sense. The most challenging part was being able to open up discussions about the meaning of the artists' work. I am so used to processing my own emotions when executing my own work, which can be a very private experience. To be on the other side of that was very intense for me. It's also very difficult to edit other people's work when you don't want to cause any hurt feelings. It's important to choose your language carefully and also allow for the freedom to work without a constrictive vibe. At the end of the curatorial experience, I realized that the best part of being a curator is being able to discover things about how artists work on a very intimate level.

Which artists (living or dead) do you find most inspiring?

Sally Mann, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Hockney, Kyle Field, Alphonse Mucha, Ellsworth Kelly, Andy Warhol, Alia Shawkat, James Turrell, Keegan McHargue, Cassandra C. Jones, Camp Bosworth, Lillian Smith.

If you could have dinner with one deceased artist who would it be and why?

My great-grandmother, Lillian Smith. She is the reason why I chose to go to the Art Institute of Chicago, she was in one of the very first classes there. I've admired her miniature paintings and mystically beautiful portraits of my grandmother and mother for years. She seemed to be a bold woman for her time, and I admire that.

You're also a foodie and food blogger, to which restaurant in the world would you take the above artist?

I would take a long walk with her through the Piedmontese vineyards in Northern Italy, and have a long lunch at Boccondivino; a very authentic, low-key and delicious slow-food restaurant in the Piedmont region of Italy.

Seattle To Allow Breast Cancer Survivor To Swim Topless At City Pool

SEATTLE (AP) ? A Seattle breast cancer survivor whose breasts were surgically removed has gained the permission to swim topless at a city pool.

But Jodi Jaecks wants to make sure her privilege is also extended to other breast cancer survivors who want to swim comfortably.

?Initially when I heard about the reversal, I was elated. Then it came that it wasn?t a policy change, it was just an exception for me. Then I was quite deflated. It seemed like it was a reaction that it was just meant to appease me,? the 47-year-old said Thursday.

Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Christopher Williams announced Wednesday that he was giving Jaecks an exception to the department?s clothing policy.

?Our original concern stems from our responsibility to accommodate the needs of all our patrons. In this case, I see nothing that might alarm the public,? Williams said in a statement. He was reacting to an article about Jaecks that was published in The Stranger weekly newspaper, which also ran a picture of her topless.

Parks spokeswoman Dewey Potter said Thursday that Williams has decided to create a committee made up of cancer survivors, parks staff, King County health representatives and others to come up with a new policy.

Until a new policy is written, Williams will review on a case-by-case basis requests from people who have had surgery and want to swim.

After enduring two surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy and the surgical removal of both her breasts in March 2011, Jaecks wanted to turn to swimming to regain her strength. But swimsuit tops proved too uncomfortable, and nerves on her chest remained tender, Jaecks said.

So she asked the manager at her city pool if she could swim topless this past March. Eventually, she heard from the head of the aquatics department, who told her she couldn?t.

?And that?s when they said it was a policy that they required gender-appropriate clothing ? regardless if I had nipples or whatever,? Jaecks said.

Potter said pool staff was following city policy. But she said it was ?unfortunate? the issue didn?t get to Williams? attention until now.

Jaecks hasn?t swum topless yet. She is planning a swim Monday. Her exception extends only to adult lap hours.

She plans to meet with Williams next week and ask that her exception be extended to anyone who survived breast cancer.

Jaecks said cancer patients shouldn?t be made to feel self-conscious by asking for special permission.

Paraguay president faces impeachment trial

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) ? Paraguayan lawmakers voted to impeach President Fernando Lugo for his role in a deadly clash involving landless farmers and announced that the former Roman Catholic bishop's impeachment trial would begin on Friday in the Senate.

Lugo, who was elected four years ago on promises that he would help the South American country's poor, went on national television to dismiss rumors that he would resign and vowed to face the trial "with all its consequences."

The lower house voted 76-1 on Thursday to impeach the president. Hours later the Senate announced that it will begin his impeachment trial on Friday.

In Paraguay, a poor, landlocked country with a history of political instability, the vote prompted frightened residents in the capital, Asuncion, to shutter businesses and pull children out of schools. Hospitals were put on alert, freeing up beds in case of possible violence.

Paraguayans were unnerved by the possibility that the looming showdown in the opposition-controlled Senate could spark street protests such as those that followed the March 1999 assassination of Vice President Luis Maria Argana.

"We are not going to escape turbulence, it's coming," said Paraguayan political analyst Horacio Galeano Perrone, who specializes in national defense issues. "If you were to ask me, I'd tell you to go to the supermarket and buy batteries, buy everything."

Lugo's election in 2008 ended 61 years of rule by the Colorado Party, and he has constantly clashed with Congress, where he has few firm allies. His election was seen as part of South America's leftward swing.

If ousted, Lugo would be replaced by Vice President Federico Franco, who belongs to the president's governing coalition. Franco, of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, "is ready to assume command and pacify the country," said Liberal lawmaker Sallim Buzarquis.

Critics blame Lugo for the violence that erupted last week when police tried to evict about 150 farmers from the 4,900-acre (2,000-hectare) reserve, which is part of a huge estate owned by a Colorado Party politician. Advocates for the farmers say the landowner used political influence to get the land from the state decades ago, and say it should have been put to use for land reform.

Seventeen people died in the clash.

Lugo, 63, has expressed sorrow at the confrontation and accepted the resignations of his interior minister and his chief of police.

On the streets of the Paraguayan capital, opinions about the impeachment effort were mixed.

"Lugo should finish his mandate," said Benito Canete, a 68-year-old concierge in an apartment building. "I think that if they get rid of him now it will be bad for the country."

Ana Campuzano, a 42-year-old odontologist, backed the ouster effort.

"Lugo should resign, it was bad for him to remain" after the deadly clash, she said. "It's his fault because he doesn't know how to manage things."

Socialist Carlos Filizzola, who until Saturday was Lugo's interior minister, called the vote by lawmakers an "institutional coup" and said he thought the president's fate had already been decided.

"The political trial is a formality," he said.

Paraguay is the world's No. 4 supplier of soybeans and land disputes have risen in recent years as farmers seek more land to grow the crop, which is the country's top export earner.

Lugo, who resigned as a bishop to run for the presidency, had promised farmland for 87,000 landless families. But as he nears the end of his term next year, he has failed to deliver, partly because his programs have been blocked in the legislature.

Lugo is still backed by some farmworker groups, including several whose leaders said they wanted to travel to the capital to demonstrate their support.

On Thursday, Lugo urged lawmakers to do all they can to avoid an impeachment trial, warning that it could be resisted by many citizens who back him and would put them on the wrong side of history.

Paraguay's land ownership problems stretch back nearly 140 years to a war Paraguay lost to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Saddled with crushing war debt, Paraguay began selling off government holdings that amounted to 95 percent of the country, with the most fertile parcels going to political cronies.

Privatizations accelerated under the 1954-1989 dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner and into the early 1990s, when about 17 million acres (7 million hectares) ended up in the hands of just 1,877 people, according to a 2004 government study.

In 1999, the assassination of Vice President Argana deepened a political clash and led to demonstrations calling for President Raul Cubas Grau of the Colorado Party to be tried for Argana's killing. Seven demonstrators died in a confrontation with government forces, leading to Cubas' resignation.
